What happens when we are stressed?

Our bodies go through physical changes when we are stressed. Changes are immediate and can accumulate over time. Our heart rate increases and our breath becomes shallow. Adrenal fatigue may also be occuring - our adrenals produce the hormone cortisol which helps deal with stress. Without enough cortisol, we can go into overwhelm very quickly and feel fatigued. Our rest and digest nervous system either slows down or shuts down. In a stressed state, our body’s sole function is to keep us safe and alive - it gives up the job of keeping us well. We are only meant to be in a stressed state for a few minutes at a time. But many of us have the effects of long-term stress and overwhelm all the time. This leads us to a whole range of symptoms like inflammation, the beginnings of early-disease, system dysfunction, weight imbalances and just feeling really awful. Our mind and body cannot heal when our nervous system is dealing with stress.

And what happens when we relax?

When we intentionally bring about the relaxation response, our heart rate and blood pressure decrease; we feel calmer; our digestive system works for us and not against us; we have more energy; and our body is free to heal. BeCalmed Studio works on releasing physical and mental tensions caused by stress and overwhelm. By using simple breath work, easy supported postures, and lovely meditation, your body will relax. The rest and digest side of your nervous system system (the oppostie of fight or flight) will do its job. You are flooded with goodness. Your body can only heal when it rests. If you want to feel better — whatever that means to you— chances are you are ready to truly relax.

Why do we need to re-learn to relax?

Relaxation is an art. It is something that needs to be re-learnt and practiced. If we learn how to relax, we can bring the relaxation response into our lives at any time, any where. The world has become so clever. But the way we experience it has not. Relaxation is what settles us and balances us. Tension and temporary stress is fine and humans are designed to handle stress. But excess tension and stress shows up in the body (headaches, insomnia, digestion - you’ll have your own list). We are nervous system beings and we need to practice balance. Maybe now is the right time for you to re-learn to relax. Learn simple techniques with BeCalmed Studio that will stay with you forever.

Want to chat or pop round to the studio for an introduction? Don’t be shy - many people who find me would never go to a yoga studio or gym. But they come here and feel super comfortable. My teeny studio only fits four people and often there’ll be just you and one other. It’ll become like your home of rest. You can be yourself here!
